During his tenure as Vice Consul at the German Consulate in New York, Stefan and Anna Schlueter and the Kohlers became great friends. When Stefan Schlueter became German Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, he twice invited Karen to the Caribbean for concerts and master classes. On both occasions, Karen wore gowns by renowned Trinidadian fashion designer, Claudia Pegus, several of which she brought back home with her. Master classes were held at the University of Trinidad and Tobago with performing arts students of all disciplines. The days following the concerts and workshops were spent relaxing in this island paradise and rekindling Karen’s passion for sailing, something she grew up doing on the south shore of Long Island and along the Eastern seaboard.
